Othello wouldn’t have slept with Emilia because it’s too important to the story that he’s “morally perfect.” The fall of a perfect person being manipulated into murder is the tragedy of the character. Some people just want to watch the world burn. The film The Dark Knight does something similar with the Joker with his various stories: “Wanna know how I got these scars?” What makes Iago interesting (and disturbing) is that no one knows why it’s in his nature to destroy. The reasons he gives constantly change over the course of the play suggesting none of them are true. No, the play starts out with Iago justifying ruining them for Othello passing him over for a position in the army in favor Cassio (which is clearly a lie since he claims he has more valor while Cassio is too brainy.the opposite of those are obviously true). then again, seducing/marrying someone half your age did raise some eyebrows. I could see Cassio sleeping with her but Othello isn't really portrayed as a 'lusty moor' I'm not a Shakespeare expert, and It is more than likely I missed additional context clues. This lends credibility to the idea that Emilia has cheated on Iago before, or that she would entertain such a notion at the very least I can't remember the exact section, but in a conversation with Desdemona, Emilia states that if their husbands are abusive towards them, they (the wives) are justified in cheating on them. Clearly, Iago is a shitty husband and doesn't treat Emilia with much respect. Iago uses this alleged tryst between Emilia and Othello/Cassio as motivation for wanting to ruin them. I was just wondering what the general consensus is regarding Othello and Cassio's alleged trysts with Iago's wife Emilia I recently found my copy of Othello from 10th grade and reread it. First off, this question isn't for an assignment, just my own curiosity.
